I got a PDF version of the book for Safari Books online but cannot access complete source code for the book

The downloads area only has the project with empty content folders. As a result I cannot build or run the projects. This seems very unfair. I have purchased a copy of the book, just not a hard copy. Why shouldn't I have access to the contents of the CD just like anyone else who shelled out money for the book?

Is there some where I can access the CD contents?

Re: I got a PDF version of the book for Safari Books online but cannot access complete source code for the book

The free downloads on this website (without the Content projects asset files) are for the original 1.0 book. It is the updated code to run the 1.0 examples under XNA Game Studio 2.0.  So if you have the 3.0 book, you want to make sure you obtain the 3.0 source code.

Safari subscribers can download the CD contents from the Safari website. Simply click on the Examples link on their website. It is about 108MB on their server.

If you are unable to get to it, there is no way I can verifiy that you are a Safari subscriber and you will need to contact their customer service to determine why you can't successfully download the CD contents. I just tested it and was able to successfully download and extract the CD contents without issue.

For Kindle users (where there is no option to get the CD contents) we allow the purchase of the CD contents (with complete source code) separately here.

I was able to successfully download the CD contents and extract them from Safari. It is easy to miss the Examples link at the top, but if you click it you will be able to download the CD contents which includes the entire source code.

Hope this helps,

Chad

That's the thing, I am not a subscriber. I bought the book from Safari in PDF Format. It doesn't come with the CD.

Because I went the PDF route, I am without the book examples. There must be some way to get the contents fo the CD having purchased the book in PDF format? Shall I send a copy of the receipt.

I was just starting to think the Ebook thing would take off, but if this is how it will be, I guess its not going to happen any time soon.

Re: I got a PDF version of the book for Safari Books online but cannot access complete source code for the book

Do you mind sending the link where you purchased the book on Safari? The only place I can get to is the subscription service. I thought that was the only thing they offered.

Basically if the place you purchased the electronic copy of the book did not allow you to download the source code then it can be purchased on this site. It may be worth sending Safari an email asking them where you can download the CD contents that came with the book you bought.

Ultimately, if you can't get the CD contents, you can download them from the download page after purchasing a download code. So to save yourself a few dollars you should check with Safari. Since they have the source for their subscribers my guess is that it is downloadable for those that buy the book outright. Again, I didn't know that was an option. I'd like to see the link to their page where you can purchase the electronic version book without a subscription.

Good luck!

Re: I got a PDF version of the book for Safari Books online but cannot access complete source code for the book

I thought it may have been on InformIT instead of Safari directly. Looking at that link, they state:

"This is the eBook version of the printed book. If the print book includes a CD-ROM, this content is not included within the eBook version."

I'm unsure why they don't provide the CD contents, but it is for instances like this that the CD contents are available for purchase for a nominal fee on this website.

It would be beneficial if Amazon (for the Kindle) and anyone that sells PDF versions of technical books also included the CD contents. Since they don't it is available at the link above.

Thanks,

Chad
